The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God. – Rom 8:16 (AMP)
There are so many things in life that wants to define you. You have external things and internal things that might want to define you. The pressures of life are there, such as the kind of car you drive, or the kind of house you should live in, or the specific job you need to have. The internal things are things like feeling guilty about something you did, your heart may be full of fear of what the future holds or maybe you feel that you don’t qualify for God’s blessings. You might entertain feelings of worthlessness, thinking that God is not completely satisfied with your life. All these things steal from our identity. The One who really should define you is God Himself. We need to discover how He defines us.
The Bible says in John 1:12,13 that we who believe in His name are children of God, and that we don’t owe this new birth to any natural thing, but we are born of God. How great is the love God has for us that we should be named, called and counted the children of God (1 John 3:1). The first thing parents do when they expect a child is they give the child a name. The child is part of the family now, he is taken care of and nurtured. The child enjoys all the privileges of the household. God is your loving Father now and you are a son in His house (Ephesians 2:19). His Spirit, together with our own spirit, testifies that we are children of God. Any voice out there that tells you something different is a deceiving spirit. God will always tell you that you are his son (not referring to gender but position). Just as Jesus is a son of God, so are you! And because you [really] are [His] sons, God has sent the [Holy] Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba (Father)! Father!” (Galatians 4:6). Wow, realizing this should give us so much boldness towards God, to go to Him and ask Him anything, for we are no longer slaves but joint heirs with Christ (Galatians 4:7).
God sees you holy and righteous as Jesus – and so you are. You are a new creation in Christ Jesus. He has removed your transgressions from you as far as the East is from the West. All the other voices that speak the opposite are false and doesn’t come from the heart of God. Do you know that God is not the one who is pointing a finger at you and showing you all your mistakes and failures? He is the one that knows, understands, and sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15). He knows what we go through and what we find ourselves in. We can enter His presence without fear and with great confidence (Hebrews 10:22). In His presence we experience peace, we find healing, we hear His voice, and He tells us who we are in Him. You are now a citizen of heaven. You have a complete new life in Him.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. – 1 Peter 2:9 (AMP)
